Physiotherapy for COPD and Chronic Respiratory Conditions

ACP supports older people with COPD through appropriate exercise, walking, strengthening, endurance and functional mobility programs.

What is happening in COPD?

COPD causes long-term changes in the airways and lungs. Airflow is limited, and some people have difficulty moving air out of the lungs. Breathlessness can make activity feel harder, so people may become less active and gradually lose fitness and muscle strength.

How physiotherapy helps with this

Physiotherapy uses appropriately dosed exercise to improve physical conditioning and tolerance for activity. Walking, strengthening, endurance training, breathing and pacing strategies can help reduce the impact of deconditioning and make everyday activity more manageable.

What is COPD?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a group of long-term lung conditions that can cause breathlessness, coughing and reduced exercise tolerance.

What problems can people face?

People may experience breathlessness, fatigue, reduced walking distance, reduced exercise tolerance, difficulty with daily activities and fear of becoming breathless.

What can happen when it is not addressed?

People may avoid movement because they become breathless. This can contribute to reduced fitness and muscle strength, making everyday activities harder.

How ACP can help

Where clinically appropriate, ACP can provide graded exercise, walking programs, strengthening, endurance training, functional mobility, activity pacing and education. Programs are adjusted to health status and medical recommendations.

When should physiotherapy be considered?

Consider physiotherapy when respiratory symptoms are affecting walking, exercise tolerance or everyday function.
